10 Things to do when you’re having a bad day

 

In general I’m quite a happy person, positive about everything 90% of the time, but of course there is the other 10%; the bad days. The days where everything seems to go wrong and there’s nothing you can do about it. I never like those days, because you don’t know when they will happen. It can be a small thing turning your world upside down, you can wake up and immediately get that empty feeling inside. Bad days are unpredictable.

I don’t know about you guys, but I hate bad days. But there are always things I try to do to cheer myself up, maybe it’s time to share those ideas with all of you.

  • Go outside and take a walk

This works really well for me. I walk outside, maybe take my phone and earphones with me, and clear my head. I try to let go of everything that is going on in my life and just breathe. It’s amazing what a little bit of fresh air can do to a person !

  • Listen to your favorite sing along playlist

If there’s anything I love to do it’s singing along (rather horribly) to some old school songs, those that make you go “OH MY DO YOU REMEMBER THIS SONG”. To me there is nothing better than letting myself go and get completely sucked in by the music. At the moment I have a go-to playlist  : songs from 90’s till now and remember; there’s nothing to be ashamed of when you don’t know the lyrics, just look them up and sing along ! Isn’t that just the best feeling in the world ?!

  • Read your favorite book again

Even when you have already read your favorite book a hundred times, you should still go for that 101. I love books a lot there is something magical about them, especially the moment you open the book, you immediately sink into this other world and escape from your own. You just know that a wonderful story is waiting for you, so go ahead, pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee, grab a blanket, sit on the couch and don’t get off it until you finish the book (unless you have to pee of course don’t want to cause a messy problem…).

  • Get you recipes out and bake something

It’s as simple as that. Baking cookies or brownies or whatever you like ! The whole baking process distracts you for a bit and it is actually fun to do. Mixing ingredients together or my favorite thing: the smell from the oven. Makes me feel like a little girl standing in front of a bakery. But now you have to do the work, but it’s not that bad, know that once your cookies or brownies are done you can sit down and enjoy your heavenly baking goods ! If you’re in a sharing mood call up some friends, the more the merrier right ?

  • Watch a Disney movie

This one is for the big children, like myself, who still love Disney to bits. Whenever I feel a bit down a movie like Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid can really lift up my mood. Those happy songs and funny characters, they really know how to put a smile on your face. And that’s the goal ! Tip: try to avoid the sad ones that will make you cry like Bambi.

  • Take a nice warm bath

It’s okay to pamper yourself once in a while! Go to the stores, buy a facemask, a bathbomb and some candles that smell really good. Now it is time to prepare for the perfect bath: put your hair up, put on a facemask, light the candles and finally, get into the tub. On bad days you tend to overthink, so my tip for you would be: distract yourself. Read a book or balance your laptop on a chair beside the bath and watch your favorite tv show. Do whatever, just make sure your mind doesn’t wander off.

  • Meet up with a few friends

I know this probably is the last thing you want on a bad day: hanging around people, being social, looking presentable. You want to be alone, but that isn’t going to solve anything, it certainly won’t cheer you up. I’m not saying you have to go to a party, just go to a little cafe, drink some coffee, eat some pie, just a nice afternoon with a few people you actually like. If you don’t feel like going out ask them to come to your place, let them bring some food or drinks so you don’t have to worry about all that and enjoy the company of your friends.

  • Write it down

When you’re struggling with something and you don’t want to tell anyone or you don’t want anyone to know, write it down. Doesn’t matter if it’s a journal or a blog or word document, it’s all fine. As long as you can get all that frustration out on paper and not on the people around you, you’re doing great. And if you want to feel even better make a list of the things that make you happy or things you’re grateful for. And every now and then read that and maybe it will put a smile on your face.

  • Buy flowers

As long as you’re not allergic to them, this is a great thing to do! Several studies  have shown that having flowers or floral scents around you improves your mood. So come on, head over to that flower shop and get yourself a beautiful bouquet of colorful flowers. It will not only cheer you up, but your living room as well !

  • Hug someone

Last, but definitely not least, hug someone. I’m definitely a hugger, so hugging a person always makes me feel better. Hug your mom, your dad, your brother, your sister, your neighbor, your pet it doesn’t matter who or what, but putting your arms around someone can really calm you down. Not saying you should go on the street and hug strangers, because they will only get pissed, so hug a loved one.

I hope at least one of these will help you get through your day and remember, it’s okay to have a bad day. You will probably have several of them, but know that there will be good days as well, maybe even perfect days. For every bad day there will be a good day.
